  1.                                   RIGID BITORIC LENSES

  3. For patients with high amounts of corneal toricity, over 2 D to 3 D, it is often necessary to fit them with a toric base curve rigid lens to match the toric surface of the cornea.  A spherical base curve lens will not give a good physical fit.

  5. A spherical base curve lens on a toric 
  6. cornea is like putting a section of a 
  7. basketball (spherical surface) on the 
  8. side of a football (toric surface)-they 
  9. will not match.

  11. Toric base curve RGP lenses will also 
  12. have toric peripheral curves in order 
  13. to maintain a round optical zone and 
  14. give uniform peripheral clearance.  
  15. With a toric base curve the front 
  16. surface will have to be toric in most 
  17. cases to give the patient the proper 
  18. correction.
